The 5 Fall Trips to Book Before You Land Abroad (And the Order to Book Them In)

If you are flying out for fall semester in the next few weeks, five trips are worth locking in before you get on the plane: Munich for Oktoberfest, Mykonos, Morocco, Amsterdam for AMF, and Barcelona for Halloween. Everything else on our fall calendar you can genuinely sort out from your apartment once you land, and I will get to those at the bottom. These five are different because each one has a hard limit on it. Either a fixed date, a season that ends, or a number of beds that does not go up no matter how many people want them.

Munich for Oktoberfest, September 18 to October 5

The beds are the whole game here. Hotels go first, then the hostels, then the camping, and after that people start commuting in from an hour away and hating their lives. If you have not sorted where you are sleeping, do that before you think about anything else. Two things nobody tells you. First, the tents are free to walk into, but on a weekend you want to be at the gate around 8am if you want a table, and a table is the entire experience. Second, buy the lederhosen or the dirndl at home. Trying to buy one in Munich the week of is a tourist tax and the decent ones are already gone. We run party camping with Stoketoberfest right by the festival grounds, tents already set up and breakfast cooked, and Flex+ members drink the open bar free.

Mykonos, and only in September

The thing people miss about Mykonos is that it closes. It is a seasonal island, so by mid October a lot of the beach clubs and a good chunk of the hotels shut for the winter, and the flight schedule shrinks right along with them. Which means Mykonos is not competing with Morocco for a weekend in November. It is competing with Oktoberfest for a weekend in September. That is the actual decision. Pick one, book it, and let the other one go. And a warning I will keep repeating: Mykonos with the wrong group is just an expensive headache. It is a trip that lives or dies on who is on the boat with you, so sort the people before you sort the dates.

Morocco, any weekend, but not for any number of people

Morocco is the one trip on the fall calendar that is a real package rather than a city you show up in. Transport, the desert camp, the riad, all of it moves together. So the limit is not the calendar, it is capacity. You can go almost any weekend from September through November, and that flexibility is exactly why people put it off and then find the good weekends full. It is also the trip fall students ask me about more than any other, by a wide margin. If Morocco is on your list at all, pin a weekend now and worry about the details later.

Amsterdam for AMF, October 24

This one is simple. It is a single night with a ticket attached, on October 24. No ticket, no trip, and no amount of planning around it changes that. So the order matters more than usual: get the ticket, then get the bed, then book the flight. Amsterdam books out hard for festival week and the hostel prices roughly double, which catches people who assumed they could sort accommodation the week before like they would for a normal weekend. This is not a normal weekend.

Barcelona for Halloween, October 31

Halloween in Barcelona is one night and functionally every abroad student in southern Europe has it circled. Students fly in from Florence, Rome, Milan and Madrid, which means the thing that gets expensive first is not the club, it is the flight. Book the flight in September for a night in October and figure out where you are actually going later. That is backwards from how you would plan any other weekend, and it is the right way round for this one. If Barcelona is already your city, you have the easy version of this problem. Everyone else is buying a seat on the same four routes.

What you can genuinely leave alone until you are there

This is the half of the calendar that keeps the other half sane. Budapest, Prague, Tenerife, London, Paris and Lisbon are all fine to book around two weeks out. Nothing about them sells out in a way that ruins the trip, and booking them early mostly just locks you into a weekend you might want back. Amalfi Coast and Dubrovnik sit in the middle, call it a month ahead. The point of the fall calendar was never to make you book twelve trips in August. It was to show you which four or five have a clock running and which ones do not.

One set that is closer than you think

Opening weeks sneak up on people. Our Lisbon boat party is September 3, the Barcelona boat party is September 9, and the Ibiza boat party is September 12. If you are reading this in mid August, all three are inside a month, and two of them land in your first week on the ground when you have not unpacked yet. Those are the ones worth deciding on this week rather than after you land, because the first weekend abroad is the one where friend groups actually form.

When should I book fall study abroad trips?

Work backwards from what limits each trip. Anything with a fixed date and a ticket, like AMF or Halloween in Barcelona, wants six to eight weeks. Anything with finite capacity, like Oktoberfest beds or a Morocco package, wants as much lead time as you can give it and is already tight in mid August. Anything that is just a city with hostels and cheap flights, which is most of them, is fine at two weeks. Booking a normal city weekend three months out does not save you much and costs you flexibility.

Which fall trip sells out first?

Oktoberfest accommodation, comfortably. Munich has a fixed housing stock and Oktoberfest brings in millions of people over two and a half weeks, and abroad students all want the same two weekends in the middle. Morocco packages are second because the capacity is genuinely small. Mykonos is the sneaky one, since it does not so much sell out as simply stop existing once the season ends.

Is it too late to book Oktoberfest in mid August?

No, but you are choosing from what is left rather than what is best. Central hotels at a sane price are mostly gone by now. Camping and hostels further out are still live and honestly camping is the better trip anyway if you are going with a group, because everyone is in one place and you are not coordinating six people across four addresses at 7am. What you cannot do is show up in September with nothing booked and expect to figure it out.

The part nobody plans for, which is paying as a group

Here is what actually kills group trips, and it is never the itinerary. It is eight people, one deposit, and two of them paying late. Somebody fronts the whole thing on a personal card, spends three weeks chasing Venmos, and by the second trip nobody wants to be that person so nobody books anything.
